When Sandy destroyed thousands of New Yorkers' homes, Airbnb host Shell wanted to help her fellow New Yorkers. She opened up the doors to her Brooklyn loft and welcomed in people like Monica who lost her home in Rockaway Beach, Queens.

Shell set off a movement, and over 1,400 Airbnb hosts followed her lead. Partnering with the City of New York, Airbnb set up a dedicated page to make it easier for those impacted by the storm to find free or deeply discounted accommodations in the midst of a crisis.
